Designing for Equity and Engagement in Brightspace
I have partnered with a faculty member to reimagine three film studies courses—each with its own unique set of pedagogical and accessibility challenges. This session will share key strategies and behind-the-scenes lessons from these collaborative projects, showcasing how thoughtful instructional design and technology integration can transform learning experiences.

We developed an asynchronous micro-certificate course for faculty, focusing on updated academic policies. Despite time and resource constraints, we showcased innovative design, UDL principles, and accessibility. Using Brightspace, we created interactive escape rooms and incorporated AI personas to enhance engagement and make the learning more relatable. The panel will discuss our design process, use of multimedia, and how we collected feedback for continuous improvement.

Bernie, a Film Studies professor, Stella, an instructional designer and Evelyn, Learning Technologies Specialist, discuss their experience of replacing an expensive publisher’s textbook.

It was important for him to drop the textbook in favor of Open Access resources because it removed an obstacle to students accessing the course materials, consequently increasing retention rates and overall student success. Technology has enhanced his teaching experience through using digitally formatted elements for his courses to create a technologically enabled teaching/learning environment. These features included template development, creative use of Open materials instead of pricey textbooks and having students apply closed captions and Creative Commons licences in a move toward more authentic learning that has a place “out in the real world.”
